A bstract We study 4d membranes in type IIA flux compactifications of the form AdS 4 × X 6 , where admits a Calabi-Yau metric. Dynamic instabilities in biological membranes
A phase-field model for dealing with the elastic bending energies is studied in the context of dynamic instabilities in membranes. We use it to study curvature-driven pearling instability in vesicles induced by the anchorage of amphophilic polymers on the membrane. Within this model, we obtain the morphological changes reported in the experimental literature. The formation of a homogeneous pear...
متن کاملInflation and Instabilities of Hyperelastic Membranes
The applications of membranes are increasing rapidly in various fields of engineering and science. The geometric, material, force and contact non-linearities complicate their analysis, which increases the demand for computationally efficient methods and interpretation of counter-intuitive behaviours. To understand the complex behaviour of membrane structures, it is necessary to perform parametr...
متن کاملElectrical Instabilities in Double Layers and Membranes
The effect of applied voltage V on local thickness fluctuations (LTF) in lipid bilayers is examined using the continuum model and accounting for non-locality of membrane elastic moduli. Ponderomotive forces, calculated from the linearized Poisson-Boltzmann equation, reduce LTF energy quadratically with V . Combined with a significant increase in the apex field gradient and perturbation of lipid...
متن کاملIntersecting membranes in AdS and Lovelock gravity
Colliding and intersecting thin membranes of matter are studied in the Lovelock higher order curvature theory of gravity. We restrict the study to constant curvature membranes in constant curvature AdS and dS background and consider their general intersections. This illustrates some key features which make the higher Lovelock theory different to the Einstein gravity. Lovelock terms couple hyper...
متن کاملQuadrupole Instabilities of Relativistic Rotating Membranes
We generalize recent study of the stability of isotropic (spherical) rotating membranes to the anisotropic ellipsoidal membrane. We find that while the stability persists for deformations of spin l = 1, the quadrupole and higher spin deformations (l ≥ 2) lead to instabilities. We find the relevant instability modes and the corresponding eigenvalues. These indicate that the ellipsoidal rotating ...
